Over at www.shacknews.com they have the new Duke Nukem Forever teaser trailer. The site is getting hammered. Thankfully, someone uploaded it to youtube.com. Now hopefully we won't have to wait until 2011 until the next trailer ...

Duke Nukem Forever Trailer Releasing Tomorrow
Holy Crap! I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry? I'm sure everyone will still let loose with "that will come out right after Duke Nukem Forever...".

No, really. "It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever. ... Rest assured more is coming." - George Broussard

30 Years of LucasFilm Staff Christmas Cards
Over at slashfilm there's a cool article about the different holiday greeting cards that have been sent to LucasFilm employees and business partners. Personally my two favorites are the following:
Yoda as Santa on a sleigh with a california license plate which reads “YODA”
The 2005 Holiday card (click to enlarge)
This one has everything from Indiana Jones to the twin suns from Tatooine.

Best Buy Hates Satire and Free Speech
Best is giving out Holiday cheer via Cease & Desist Letter!
Yet another reason to really hate Best Buy. They have done some really retarded things in the past. If they ever get tired of having bad PR, they might want to take lessons from places like Linden Labs, when they sent a proceed and permitted letter.

Red vs Blue Show Off New Halo 3 Videos
Last night on the Spike TV Video Game Awards the guys from Rooster Teeth, makers of Red vs Blue, showed their first new video based on the Halo 3 engine. There's a second video up now Xbox Live, and on their website.
I have to say both videos are great. Anyone who is a fan of Red vs Blue will enjoy these two new videos.

New Eve Online expansion renders Windows XP unusable
This is most definitely NOT the way to roll out a new expansion for a game. How can something so major get past the testers to live? Talk about poor QA.
CCP Games recently released an expansion for their MMORPG Eve Online containing new premium graphics content. However, the installer was programmed to delete C:/boot.ini, making it impossible to reboot without manually repairing your Windows XP installation.Vista is unaffected.read more | digg story

Blizzard and Activison Merge
I'm kinda torn on this issue. I don't really play Wow, but I'm really looking forward to Starcraft 2. The merged name is craptacular. Activision Blizzard? Come on...
PC World has an interesting take on what's happening. They do make a good case for how it "could" be good. I'm hoping Blizzard gets to keep all the people who make their games great. I guess only time will tell.

Conan O'Brien pays salaries of 80 people
Every once in a while you come across something pretty cool. I can't think of anything cooler than this class act by Conan O'Brien.

How It Sucks
Here is an interesting site called How It Sucks. It has an interesting way of looking at consumer product reviews from Amazon. The site takes recent reviews from users and applies a proprietary rating system to show you how much a product "sucks". The longer the red bar, the more it sucks. Some of the summary descriptions are pretty funny "eh, not worth it", "buy it if you have to", and "doesn't really suck".
Navigating the site is pretty easy. The popup when you mouse over a picture shows you a little taste of what the comments are like too. If your like me and do a majority of your shopping online, this could help you decide if something is worth getting.

William Shatner and Mr. T do WoW Commercials
A friend of mine forwarded me a link to the new World of Warcraft TV commercials that Blizzard is going to start airing. You can say what you want about WoW, but the people at Blizzard most definitely have a sense of humor.
This has to be one of the funnies things I have seen in a while related to online gaming. Mr. T talks about his Night Elf Mohawk. While William Shatner talks about playing as a Shaman, while wearing a robe that looks like its for a Jedi Knight.

OLPC Give 1, Got 1
Today I came across an interesting article about the OLPC project (One Laptop Per Child), on laptopmag.com. It is about how a woman went to Africa to deliver one of the OLPC laptops.
If you look at the core goals of the OLPC project it seems to me like a great way to help get some third world children better education. The OLPC is designed specifically for children in developing nations. On November 11th, they started a two week One Laptop Per Child's Give 1, Get 1 program. This program allows anyone in the U.S. and Canada to buy one for $399, and then one gets donated in their name to another child. On top of that you get on year of free access to T-Mobile HotSpot locations in the U.S.
I've been loosely following the project here and there, and I had to wonder why were these being offered for sale? The projects founder, Nicholas Negroponte admitted that not all of the verbal agreements he had with Governments were honored. So now if you want to get one of these laptops and have one donated go to www.laptopgiving.org. For the complete hardware specs of what your getting, go to www.laptop.org
After reviewing all the information I decided that I would get one of the units, it is a worthy cause. Check back for a hands on review of the unit once I can get my hands on it.
Here's some photos of the unit itself, and the interface.

The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test
Well ... I just took the Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test and I scored about what I expected: 47 % Nerd, 69% Geek, 34% Dork, with the title Pure Geek.
Now, I'm not sure if I should proclaim this from the rooftops or to cower in my room in shame ... I'll let you be the judge. If you want to take the test, I'd like to hear what scores people got in the comments. Go here for the test.
Keep scrolling down to see the results from the site.

Your Score: Pure Geek
47 % Nerd, 69% Geek, 34% Dork
For The Record:
A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Geek, earning you the title of: Pure Geek.
It's not that you're a school junkie, like the nerd, and you don't really stand out in a crowd, like the dork, you just have some interests that aren't quite mainstream. Perhaps it's anime, perhaps it's computers, perhaps it's bottlecaps, perhaps it's all of those and more. Your interests take you to events and gatherings that are filled with people you find unusual and beyond-the-pale, but you don't quite consider yourself "of that crowd." Instead, you consider yourself to be fairly normal.
Which, you are.
Congratulations! You're the one on the RIGHT!

Sony Portable Reader
Image via Wikipedia
A couple of months ago I got a Sony Portable Reader. Its a nifty little ebook reader that uses e-ink. A fairly new technology aimed at making it easier to read on a screen, and more closely mimic a real book.So far I have to say that I am fairly impressed with how easy it is to read on the unit. Now this holds true for books that are in the right format. But, just try and look at a pdf document that hasn't been formatted for an ebook screen and its looks terrible. Another crappy thing about the reader is the software that comes with it. The software was recently updated, but still lacks in features. All it does is let you read Sony BBeB formatted books, buy books on their connect store, and transfer books between the computer and the reader.
Like so many other devices, this one seems to have quite a following. There are tons of free books, and software that developers are making for this unit. If you want to see some more in depth reviews, grab some free books, or get some conversion software head over to Mobileread.
One of the best pieces of software I found at Mobileread is Libprs500, written by Kovid Goyal. It's written in python, and is multi-platform. It can be used as a drop in replacement for the crappy Sony software. The graphical interface is nicely laid out and it even has support for converting from several different formats to the native BBeB format. Here's some nice screen shots of what the software looks like.
Overall, I have to say I'm happy with the unit. It makes it easy to carry a whole library in your pocket, and it doesn't strain your eyes like some of the PDA ebook readers I have used in the past. It also has a good user following with a very active community.
